Shandrum

The Shandrum Céilí Band, from the Avondhu area of North Cork, takes its name from Newtownshandrum village. The band was in existence from the 1950’s through to the 1970’s playing for dances and céilithe in all the major halls across North Cork. The current band also has links to their predecessors, whose contribution was praised in the Cork Examiner in 2001 - “Michael O’Mahony and the Shandrum Céilí Band made life enjoyable for a huge number of people when there was little in the way of entertainment”.

The current band, from the same area, are now providing music for dances and céilithe much like the old band had in their heyday. The present day Shandrum band have a line up of young musicians who have all achieved massive success on the Ceili band circuit! The power, drive and lift of the band are a salute to the way the old band played; whilst also having a distinctive sound of their own. The band won the All Ireland in August 2015 in Sligo making history as the third Cork band ever to win the competition following in the footsteps of the Allow in 2007 and the Awbeg in 2012! In August 2016, they retained the All-Ireland title for the second year in succession. The band have recently announced that they will be releasing their debut studio album in 2017.
